Announcements!
Independent Reading Project - have your book by Wednesday, 12/2. The project is the Wednesday after Winter break. You may choose a book not on the list, but it needs to be high school level or higher, and it must be by an American author! If you have questions, see me.

We will be in the lab on Wednesday, 12/2 for Study Island.

You will have in-class reading time on Thursday, 12/3.

Romanticism ppt - We stopped before we got to the Fireside Poets, so don't worry about it.

Homework: Read Paul Revere's actual account of his famous ride and compare it Longfellow's poem. How does Longfellow adapt the story and add elements of romanticism to it?

Edgar Allan Poe Test

If you missed today's test, you have until Tuesday, 12/1 to make it up. Try to make it up next week. The longer the wait, the more you will forget.

Study Island Tone & Mood must be completed by today!

You will have a test on all your vocab words on Tuesday. Study them!!!

Poe Test

Study the following for the test tomorrow:

Basic plot, characters and setting of all stories and poems.

For all - think about how imagery and setting create mood.

"The Pit and the Pendulum" - religious/death symbolism
"The Masque of the Red Death" - allegory and symbolism
"The Black Cat" - suspense, irony, inner good vs. evil
"The Fall of the House of Usher"

"The Raven," "Annabel Lee" and "A Dream within a Dream" - poetic devices!!! rhyme (end, internal, half), repetition, personification, etc.

Today is Poe Review Day!

Review the following short stories and poems.
"The Pit and the Pendulum"
"The Black Cat"
"The Masque of the Red Death"
"The Fall of the House of Usher"
"Annabel Lee"
"A Dream within a Dream"
"The Raven"

You should know basic plot, and literary and poetic devices for each poem/story. Also, analyze how these stories and poems relate to the idea of "Dark Romanticism"

Your homework is to study for Friday!

Thursday, we will be working on Study Island assignments.

Do you think it is possible for people to have an unbreakable bond? Can two people be connected on such a strong emotional or mental level that they can tell what the other is thinking or what is happening to the other person without thinking? Why or why not? Explain.

We also finished discussing "The Fall of the House of Usher" and read two additional poems from Poe.
Be ready to review for the test on Friday!

  2. Expect a comprehensive test on vocabulary next week (date is TBA). 
  3. Turn in the assignment from Friday (11/13) by this Friday (11/20). It will count as a grade!

Assignments
We checked and reviewed the Vocabulary/Using Thought Transitions worksheet.

We started reading "The Fall of the House of Usher." Your homework is to finish reading the story for tomorrow! Pay attention to many of the literary devices that we have previously discussed with Poe in class (mood, setting, imagery, foreshadowing, narrator, etc.)

Hint, hint - I like to give quizzes on reading homework.

I'm sorry I'm not with you today and I'm sure you will all be very melancholy without me. ; )

Here is your assignment.

Complete Collection 1: Skills Review in the Elements textbook (orange book). Complete all questions and assignments, including the essay, on pages 126 to 131. Work will be collected when I return and counted as a grade.
This assignment includes one of the Anne Bradstreet poems we read together in class (and that I hope you remember!).

I will check and review the Using Thought Transitions/Vocab homework on Monday. Don't forget that Study Island Setting Assignment is due today. You can turn in your Record on Monday (if you haven't done so already).

The next Study Island assignment, Tone & Mood, is due next Friday, 11/20. Please use the attached Study Island Record Sheet to complete with the online assignment.
